Learning to read the game is one of the most important skills in rugby. As your understanding grows, you'll begin to recognize attacking and defensive patterns, anticipate what will happen next, and make better decisions under pressure. Good rugby players know when to run, pass, kick, support a teammate, or compete for possession, consistently choosing the option that gives their team the greatest chance of success.
Making the right decision can be the difference between a try being scored, keeping possession or a turnover. The player is essentially putting the Game Awareness into action. It is a vital, split-second cognitive skill required for everything from simple passing to overall match strategy.
On Attack: The ball-carrier must quickly read the defensive line to decide whether to run into space, pass to a teammate (such as a delayed or "cut-out" pass), or kick over the defensive line.
On Defense: Players must decide whether to rush up and apply aggressive pressure, drift sideways to cover wide space, or commit to a tackle immediately to stop a potential offload
Experienced players control territory, possession, tempo, and field position throughout a match.
