On 22 November 2014, Great Falls Rugby hosted its first Annual Medstar National Rehab Hospital tournament in Great Falls village.
This project was hastily put together by coach Gary Coetzee in an effort to honor the wonderful people at NRH and the hard work they perform to improve the quality of the lives of their patients. Gary himself is a patient at NRH following a neck injury and is able to walk again after being quadriplegic. Much of the credit goes to the therapists.
The tournament is used to raise awareness of the programs at NRH and benefits the Medstar Adaptive Sports Programs. More info can be found here: www.medstarnrh.org/our-services/adaptive-sports-fitness/
Level of play: TAG, Youth Boys, Middle School Boys, and High School Boys (JV&V). If there is interest and field space/time, we can consider girls.

Great Falls Rugby is excited that Rugby Virginia has agreed to calendar the tournament as an annual event. The Tournament saw teams of all age groups from DC, Maryland as well as Virginia. These included both club rugby organizations and schools. Significantly, the tournament saw the first competitive Fall rugby competition between the younger tag/touch kids (U11, U9, U7). It was a successful day and fun was had by all. We look forward to 2015! The event was covered by both print and television news media. Gary agreed to a NBC news spot. A link to that coverage appears here. Unfortunately all the good rugby bits about encouraging people to come out got cut! A Connection article can be seen here.
With teams from Gonzaga, Roosevelt, St John's, Heights, Rochambeaux (French School) and DeMatha. Rugby VA and Great Falls will complete the round-up. We also had Middle School teams, as well as TAG teams.
With rugby running on 3 fields at the same time, our goals were met: a meaningful donation for MedStar, lot's of rugby played, and raised awareness for the sport and MedStar.
A meaningful donation and raised awareness for the sport and MedStar Adaptive Sports Program. Thanks to all who made the tournament a success. It was again a cold windy day but the boys and girls were eager to play! Thanks to the big group of referees who came out to help. A lot of people got involved to make this work well, thank you.
